A.A.S Degree (RN Program) The A.A.S. Degree Program is a five (5) semester program of study. It prepares the beginning technical nurse to function as a provider of care, communicator, client teacher, manager of client care and member of the nursing/health care team in structured health care settings, in collaboration with the professional nurse and other members of the healthcare team of baccalaureate and higher degree prepared nurses. The A.A.S. Program in Nursing is divided into a one-semester Pre-Clinical Sequence of courses and a two-year Nursing Major Sequence of courses. Students are required to take nursing courses as outlined completing the program in no more than four (4) Years.
Pre-Clinical Sequence A B- is required in science courses. No grade less than a C can be earned in Liberal Arts courses.
Admission into Clinical Sequence
· Pass All CUNY Assessment Tests: Reading, Writing and Math. · 2.7 G.P.A. with a grade with a grade of C or better in English (ENG 112, 150; MTH 120; PSYCH 101). · G.P.A. of at least 2.7. with a grade of B- or better in science course(BIO 251, 252 or 150, 151,152; CHM 105) · Complete and submit an application for admission to the AAS Nursing Program through SASS Center (Bedford Building). · Take NLN pre-admission examination (given in March or April) · Participate in an interview/information session with the Department of Nursing Admission Retention and Progression Committee. · Submit a copy of your transfer transcript (if you have attended college prior to MEC) · Enrolled in MEC a minimum of one (1) semester · Complete required assessments given by the Department (writing, math, etc.) · Meet all requirements as outlined by the department. Retention/Progression through the Nursing Clinical Major Sequence All students must meet the following requirements for retention and progression:
Readmission to the A.A.S. Nursing Program Readmission is not automatic. Students, who have not been in attendance for one (1) or more semesters, must apply for readmission, and meet all program requirements in effect at the time of readmission. Assessment of ability to meet program requirements is necessary. (Student will not automatically enter into last course failed). Available seats may be a factor, therefore students are not guaranteed permission to return at time of request. Request for readmission must be in writing submitted 60 day prior to requested time of admission. Graduation Medgar Evers College will award the Associate in Applied Science Degree (AAS) in Nursing upon the student's completion of all Sixty-four (64) required nursing program credits. Graduates are then eligible to apply to sit for the NCLEX-RN. The NCLEX-RN application requirements include: (1) satisfactory completion of AAS Degree requirements, (2) a valid social security number, (3) a minimum age of eighteen, (4) good moral standards as defined by the New York State Education Department.
