JOY WHITTINGTON, LEARN AND EARN PROGRAM IN POLYMER AND MATERIAL SCIENCE OF POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY. ANN BROWN, MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE; AND NANCY TOONEY AND PAMELA KRAMER, POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY, SPONSORS.

A major goal of the BIOLOGY-CSTEP of Medgar Evers College is to increase the number and quality of students successfully completing the biology program. Strategies were developed to achieve this goal including instituting a Seminar Series which invited outstanding scientists to Medgar Evers College. The seminars, which were cosponsored by the Medgar Evers Science Association, were very well attended. Dr. Nancy Tooney from Polytechnic University gave a presentation on their Learn and Earn Program. Prompted by this presentation a number of students from Medgar Evers applied for and were accepted into the program, which provided students with a one semester exposure to polymer and material science, followed by a summer introduction to engineering. The summer experience included laboratory exercises on methods of problem solving and on the tools and techniques of engineering. It was designed to emphasize group participation through team work, report writing and recitations. Consequently, our verbal, writing and interpersonal skills were strengthened.

This project was supported in part by grant 0516-94-0019 from the New York State Education Department (Dr. E. Catapane, P.I.), by the Research Careers for Minority Scholars grant from NSF (Dr. N. Tooney, P.I.), and by a grant from ORN-DOD (Dr. P. Kramer, P.I.).
