The Profession of Medical Sonography

"Diagnostic Medical sonographers use high-tech ultrasound equipment, which enables dynamic visualization of the organs within the body, to produce and evaluate ultrasound images and related data that are used by physicians to make medical diagnosis. Sonographers function as integral members of the health care team, communicating with patients, physicians, hospital staff and colleagues.”
(College of Health Related Professions 2000-2001 Bulletin, SUNY/NY Health Science Center at Brooklyn, p3.)

Medical Sonographers are responsible for selecting the proper equipment for tests ordered by physicians. They explain procedures to the patients, record additional medical history, and place patients in the correct
position for testing. They monitor the screen as the scanning device moves across the body of the patient.  Sonographers note the differences between healthy and pathological areas and check for factors such as position, obstruction, or change of shape, and judge if the images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes. They also record and file the results of each sonogram.

Medical Sonographers must have extensive knowledge in anatomy, pathophysiology, physics and the medical & biological sciences.  Many sonographers develop specialties in areas such as obstetrics-gynecology, abdomen, cardiology, vascular & Doppler imaging.

Career Opportunities as a Registered Medical Sonographer

"Diagnostic Medical Sonography is one of the fastest growing diagnostic fields because it uses a noninvasive, painless and acceptably safe energy source--high frequency sound."
(College of Health Related Professions 2000-2001 Bulletin, SUNY/NY Health Science Center at Brooklyn, p3.)

Diagnostic Medical Sonography graduates are qualified for careers as clinicians, educators and administrators in private or academic practice.  Most graduates find employment in hospitals and related settings.  Others are educators and administrators in universities and colleges, while some work for equipment manufacturers.  Because of the rapidly changing technological developments in area like sonography, job opportunities and new roles continue to emerge, offering graduates excellent opportunities for employment and career growth.

Students looking to learn more about the career opportunities as a Medical Sonographer and other allied health careers are invited to attend yearly  Allied Health Career Seminars given at MEC by professionals practicing in their field.

Downstate's B.S. Degree Program in Diagnostic Medical Imaging

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at SUNY/Downstate was the first ultrasound program in the United States to offer a Bachelor of Science degree.   The program's 21 month curriculum integrates the basic and medical sciences with sonography courses, giving students a comprehensive academic base which is then applied to their practical experiences at ultrasound labs throughout the New York area.  Specialty areas taught include obstetrics-gynecology, abdomen, cardiology, as well as duplex Doppler vascular imaging, neurosonography, and courses in new applications.
(College of Health Related Professions 1996-1999 Bulletin, SUNY/NY Health Science Center at Brooklyn, p28.)

Applicants first complete a minimum of 60 credits of pre-professional (prerequisite) courses before applying to the Diagnostic Medical Imaging Program.  Once admitted, students complete 70 credits of upper level courses to be awarded the Bachelor of Science degree.
