Presented at the 3rd Annual Statewide CSTEP Conference, October 1994 MARISOL CARPIO, TASHA ELLINSON, ELVIN GRIFFITH AND OLIVER KEITH, IMPROVING STUDENTS' STUDY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH METHODS. ANTHONY UDEOGALANYA, SPONSOR, MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE. A major goal of the BIOLOGY-CSTEP of Medgar Evers College is to increase the number and quality of students successfully completing the biology program. Strategies were developed to improve students' basic study skills and to increase their knowledge of the scientific methods. A special one semester course in Research Methods was designed and implemented as a part of the CSTEP activities. Students were shown how the scientific method is put into practice via presentations by different researchers in different aspects of biology. Trips to New Jersey University College of Medicine and Dentistry and to the Brookhaven National Research Labs also provided students with a direct view of modern scientific research and of the scientists who do it. The "Cambridge-Stratford Study Skills Course" also was given to the students. This is a 10 part course which covers basic topics which are important for students to master if they are to succeed in college such as goal setting, time management, reading and writing comprehension, memorization, note taking, critical thinking, problem solving and test taking techniques. The activities reinforce students' abilities and encourage all students to aspire to excel and become "A" students.
This project was supported in part by grant 0516-94-0019 from the
New York State Education Department.
