COURSE DESCRIPTION
Biology 323
is a one semester, 3 credit lecture course that meets 3 hours per week. It serves the interests of Nursing and Paramedical students. The students are exposed to the knowledge of the basic mechanism of the diseases affecting the adults and the children. Fundamental concepts of the disease process and its outcome will be discussed. The discussions will include topics such as Trauma, Stress, Genetic, Infectious, Neoplastic, Immunological, Neurological, Cardiovascular, Pulmonary, Digestive and the Urinary diseases.

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Study the pathological mechanisms underlying diseased states with respect to the body’s various systems.
  2. Describe the manifestations of the diseases in response to these mechanisms.
  3. Interpret the response of the cells, the tissues, organs and the whole body as a result of the onset of the disease conditions.
  4. Contrast similarities and differences of the body in response to specific diseases.
  5. Utilize the knowledge of the course contents when formulating the nursing diagnoses and writing the plans of care for the sick.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

  1. The course is intended for Nursing. Premedical and Paramedical students.
  2. Attendance is required.
  3. There will be 2 or 3 examinations of multiple choice type.
  4. You will be required to take 4 essay type quizzes of 15 minutes duration in which you will be required to detail your plan of action to a real acute or chronic disease situation. Points will be deducted for spelling and grammatical errors.
  5. You are encouraged to ask questions during and after the class. For additional help please see the instructor during the office hours. Office hours are listed at the end of the syllabus.
  6. Tutorial services as well as computer facilities are available. Please contact the instructor or Biology Department Chair for the help.

GRADING:

MIDTERM EXAM First hourly exam. Multiple Choice Type, 40% of the grade
OPTIONAL Second hourly Exam. Multiple Choice Type
FINAL EXAM 2-hour exam. Multiple Choice Type, 40% of the grade. If you miss the Final Exam, you will receive an “ABS” grade:

Quizzes will be given unannounced. Short essay types answers required. 15 minutes allowed for the answers. Four quizzes will be given during the semester. They will make up 20% of the grade.
