Policy Statement Regarding Mentoring

TO:      Medgar Evers College Faculty
FROM:  Dr. Charlotte Phoenix
DATE:  March 20, 2003
RE:        MENTORING

The mentoring of students by faculty has been shown in several studies to positively impact  persistence and success in College. In fact, studies conducted in which former students were asked to identify the single most important factor responsible for their success in college reveal that a mentoring relationship with a faculty was high on the list.  Our own experiences here at the college also confirm this view. The creation of the SASSC center further reinforces the importance the college attaches to student advocacy as well as freeing the faculty from advisement in order to concentrate on mentoring.

Therefore,

  • Effective Fall 2003, the College will consider mentoring as part of student guidance in all faculty  personnel decisions including reappointments, tenure and promotions.

  • Faculty would be expected to demonstrate a clear evidence of ongoing mentoring of students outside of the classroom including numbers of students, as well as the nature and frequency of guidance.

Thank you.

Provost Dr. Charlotte Phoenix
