Departmental Mission

The mission of the Department of Philosophy and Religion is to

• produce graduates able to successfully pursue a variety of roles and careers, including leadership positions in social service agencies, educational institutions, charitable foundations and religious organizations;

• produce transformative leaders and engaged citizens with the depth of understanding and social commitment to create positive change;

• create a powerful engine for social interchange between the campus and the community by working with community organizations that function in the greater metropolitan area;

• partner with these and other organizations to provide students with internships, mentors, and field studies;

• cultivate intellectual discourse and discussion on campus through special conferences and colloquia that address how philosophy and religion affect and impact urban life;

• help students engage in critical self-examination, “self-actualization” and clarification of personal value systems;

• encourage greater tolerance and civility toward others in a culturally diverse student body; and

• foster ethical integrity and compassion for less fortunate members of society in all members of our community.

The recent introduction of a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies at Medgar Evers College is an important step in realizing this mission.
