Medgar Evers College (MEC) was established in 1970, and was named for the late civil rights leader, Medgar Wiley Evers (1925-1963). MEC is one of 11 senior colleges within the City University of New York and enrolls 5,300 students (approximately 1,300 in The School of Business) and approximately 2,500 continuing education students.  The MEC campus sits adjacent to the historic site where the legendary Jackie Robinson integrated major league baseball, the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, and the Brooklyn Museum.

Brooklyn is currently in resurgence and at the beginnings of a renaissance.  With Brooklyn as our living laboratory, our distinguished faculty, are able to bridge the chasm between theory and practice, in real-time.  Our vision for the School of Business is to be an institution in which our students are endowed with the education, skills, and resources that are necessary to lead this renaissance from both the public and private sectors, as well as at the grass-roots level.

The mission of the School of Business is to emphasize excellence in undergraduate business education, in the context of the liberal arts, and to prepare students: for administrative and managerial careers in both the private and public sectors; as well as preparation for graduate and/or professional studies; entrepreneurship; and leadership roles in their careers and communities.

Admission to the School's degree programs provides an opportunity to study with accomplished scholars as well as experienced practitioners in small classes. The programs are designed to give students a broad business background as well as specialized skills, as evidenced by the College-wide requirements for the B.S. in Business and the B.S. in Public Administration, the School of Business Core Course, the Public Administration Core Courses and the Bachelor of Science in
Accounting
.

During the 2000 – 2001 academic year, the Board of Trustees of The City University of New York approved two new degree programs: Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems and Bachelor of Professional Studies in Applied Management (BPS-AM) for the School.  The two new programs commenced offering courses in Fall 2001.

The School of Business continuously provides a teaching and learning environment that promotes academic excellence and intellectual growth, and fosters an appreciation of cultural diversity in a global community; while responsive to the needs of business and industry, the community, and the public sector.

Accomplished scholars and business professionals teach a cutting edge curriculum that has a strong business foundation, and reflects current trends in the marketplace. The faculty mentors 1300 students, giving them individual attention in small class settings, with a wide array of day, evening and weekend courses. Students are imbued with knowledge, analytical and decision making and leadership skills, and ethical practice.

The School's Accounting majors consistently rank tops in CUNY on the CPA Exam.

The School of Business develops students’ entrepreneurial skills by providing service learning, internships, and technical assistance to small businesses.  The senior year experience helps students to integrate knowledge, to achieve or advance their professional careers in the private and public sectors, and to pursue graduate and professional studies.

The School recently managed $2 million in grants and sponsored research and has two Centers, DuBois Bunche Center for Public Policy (DBC), and the Center for Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (CEED).

The School of Business has established two Honor Societies and an Honors Program:

  1. Delta Mu Delta
  2. Kappa Beta Delta
  3. Honors Program

It has five (5) outstanding student clubs that win national awards, participate in national and regional conferences, promote personal and career development, and provide community service.

The School of Business has produced over 2,000 graduates from its programs, including attorneys, judges, CPA's, businesspersons, managers, and entrepreneurs. The School is a member of the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) and the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Public Administration (NASPAA.
