President Crew’s Spring 2017 Semester Greeting

Tuesday, January 31, 2017

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Medgar Evers family and the Spring, 2017 semester.

Some of you are new family members and some of you are returning for another semester of invigorating and challenging courses.  For everyone -- from the most seasoned faculty member to new students -- your time here will work best if you reach out for what you need and ask plenty of questions.  We are committed to providing an environment where inquiry flourishes and creativity prevails.

We continue to offer new programs and initiatives. Last summer, we announced our first-ever Honors Program approved by the City University of New York (CUNY).  In the Fall we began offering new Graduate & Professional Preparatory Workshop to assist students in preparing to apply graduate and professional school.  The College continues to build opportunities for internships and for international education, both key components of the MEC experience.

Our faculty are not only gifted intellectually but are able to discern and cultivate the enormous potential of any student who walks through our doors.  Our contract with our students is that we will lean into their genius. Our contract with our faculty is that we will support you in your exemplary work in shaping minds and hearts, especially at a time of enormous change in our country.

Our staff offers the essential human scaffolding to keep things going – from buildings and grounds to data management to custodians. Without you, the lights would not go on to support the remarkable things that happen here day in and day out.

To our students I say: there has seldom been a more amazing time to be a college student.  Part of your work here is gaining a new self-literacy and connecting events in the wider world to what you learn in the classroom.

I invite everyone in the college community to visit the MEC website and department offices.  Check in with faculty, staff and student leaders to learn more about programs and services.

The best part of college is personal growth through relationships, learning, and new experiences.  I look forward to greeting many of you in the days ahead to hear about your individual journey. Certainly, my relationships with all of you informs who I am as president of this amazing institution.

Once again, I welcome you to Medgar Evers College.
