One of the eleven senior colleges of the City University of New York, the nation’s largest urban university, Medgar Evers College has maintained its deep roots in its community, and sustains the political, social, and economic advocacy that led to its establishment.  Formally established on July 30, 1970, it was named to honor and continue the legacy of civil rights activist Medgar Wiley Evers, assassinated June 1963.

Since its establishment, Medgar Evers College has continued to serve the population of Central Brooklyn, an area that is comprised primarily of African-Americans, and first and second generation immigrants from the Caribbean.  It is for our constituent population that we continue to maintain our commitment to students who desire self-improvement, a sound education, an opportunity to develop a personal value system, and an opportunity to gain maximum benefits from life experience and from their environment.

In keeping with the philosophy of The City University of New York and Medgar Evers College, we believe that education has the power to positively transform the lives of individuals and is the right of all individuals in the pursuit of self-actualization.

Consequently, the College's mission is to develop and maintain high quality, professional, career-oriented undergraduate degree programs in the context of liberal education. The College offers programs at both the baccalaureate and associate degree levels, giving close attention to the articulation between the two.  Complementing our academic schools, our School of Continuing Education, Community and Professional Development offers certificate programs in addition to an array of courses that enhance workplace skills or help fulfill personal goals.

Our campus has grown with the completion of the new School of Business and Student Support Services Buildings, while the next phase of our expansion – our Academic Complex I which will house the School of Science, Health and Technology - should be well underway by the time the Self-Study is completed.  When complete, the two new buildings will effect a 76% increase in its facilities, with the concomitant capacity to increase its enrollment by 41%, from approximately 4,980 students to approximately 7,000 students by 2008.

The Self-Study comes at a particularly fortuitous time for the College as we prepare for the challenges associated with significant growth.  The Self-Study Subcommittees and Steering Committee will use this opportunity to review and promote our strengths and accomplishments, while further expanding our strategic Intentional Interventions to address coming challenges. Systematic ongoing institutional assessment will promote the effectiveness of the College by disseminating information about students, programs, management and operations by providing feedback for institutional improvement, internal and external accountability, decision-making and strategic planning.  Within the framework of the Culture of Expectancy developed by the College, we will continue to strengthen the institution by fostering a positive campus ethos, educational environment, and work place for learning, creating new knowledge, and for conducting college business by the community of students, faculty, administrators and staff.  Through creative leadership and a clear vision we will excel to new levels of our mission in our quest to create success one student at a time.
