"Developing Networks of Responsibility to Educate America's Youth - Year 1"

Institute for Educational Inquiry Awards Medgar Evers College Learning Community Network a "Developing Networks of Responsibility to Educate America's Youth" Grant

Medgar Evers College Learning Community Network will serve as the primary contact organization for New York City's participation in the "Developing Networks of Responsibility to Educate America's Youth" grant initiative sponsored by the Institute for Educational Inquiry. John I. Goodlad founded the Institute for Educational Inquiry (IEI) in 1992. The IEI is an independent, nonprofit corporation with conceptual and administrative links to the Center for Educational Renewal (CER) at the College of Education, University of Washington. It is funded completely by the generous support of many philanthropic foundations dedicated to supporting education. The Institute works together with the CER to advance the Agenda for Education in a Democracy. Much of the work of the IEI involves conducting extensive professional development programs on a wide range of educational issues that bring together P-12, college of education, and arts and sciences faculty from the settings of the National Network for Educational Renewal (NNER). The professional development programs of the IEI are diverse, including long-term programs to expand diversity in teaching and teacher education programs; to integrate the arts into the preparation of all elementary classroom teachers; to develop leadership skills of faculty within schools, colleges of education, and the arts and sciences; and to establish greater understanding between journalists and educators, among others.

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation awarded IEI funding to work with sixteen communities within the NNER that are already engaged in school-university collaboration and that serve high numbers of at-risk children and/or economically low-income families. The funding supports a three-year initiative, "Developing Networks of Responsibility to Educate America's Youth", to increase the capacity of selected communities to constructively renew their local educational institutions. Grant recipients will:

  • organize and implement a local leadership program for school, university, and community leaders/future leaders
  • create and implement an action plan based on concerns and shared knowledge about the community's youths
  • make systematic, suitable changes in schools, educator preparation, and community services to better meet the needs of youths in at-risk situations-

Participation in this exciting initiative will enhance the capacity of the to Medgar Evers College Learning Community Network to achieve its goals and objectives. During the 2002-2004 school year, the Network will host a series of meetings to create an action plan to address the needs of Central Brooklyn youth. The meetings dates are:

  • Sept. 20 (Saturday, one full day at Medgar Evers College)
  • Oct. 3-5 (Friday-Sunday, full weekend, Harrison Conference Center, Glen Clove, NY)
  • Dec. 5-7 (Friday-Sunday, full weekend, Harrison Conference Center, Glen Clove, NY)
  • Jan. 23-25 (Friday-Sunday, full weekend, Harrison Conference Center, Glen Clove, NY)
