Medgar Evers College Learning Community Network
Best Practices Fair
A priority goal of The Medgar Evers College Learning Community Network is to improve the recruitment, preparation, and
retention of highly effective teachers for our urban schools. Developing and sustaining a meaningful partnership with
community school districts and business and cultural institutions is essential towards achieving this goal. Throughout
the school year, Medgar Evers College is involved actively with NYC Board of Education local community school districts:
13, 16, and 17 and local high schools: Benjamin Banneker, Clara Barton, Prospect Heights, and Paul Robeson; as well as
community institutions: i.e., Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Each May, The Medgar Evers Learning Network hosts a Best
Practices In Education Fair as a culminating activity to highlight exemplary projects of Network members. This event is
usually held the last Friday in May to coincide with the celebration of Malcolm X's birthday. Malcolm X believed,
"Education is your passport to the future... for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today". View the

In May 2000, The Medgar Evers Learning Network implemented The First Annual Best Practices In Education Fair. The fair
date coincided with the celebration of Malcolm X's 75th Birthday. The morning program was co-hosted by Akeem
Productions, Inc. Numerous private and public school students attended an assembly program consisting of student
performances and a film that highlighted the life of Malcolm X. In the afternoon, literacy workshops were held for P-12
teachers. In addition to the workshops, local cultural institutions (i.e., Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Brooklyn Children's
Museum) distributed information about their organizations and public schools displayed exemplary student projects.

The Medgar Evers Learning Network collaborated with MEC Department of Physical, Environmental & Earth Sciences, and
Office of External Programs and Continuing Education to co-hosted The Second Annual Best Practices In Education Fair in
May 2001. The fair was expanded to include a Science & Technology Expo-Conference. Dr. Noreen Hosier, Coordinator of
The Medgar Evers Learning Network co-hosted the day's activities with Fulvia Jordan, STEP Director and Lisa Superville,
Liberty Partnership Coordinator. The day's events included several interactive workshops that were beneficial for a
variety of audiences, i.e., administrators, teachers, students, and parents. In addition to workshops, fair participants
visited the Science & Technology Expo. A variety of vendors, cultural, and health institutions presented displays and
demonstrations.
