Merit Scholarship

Merit scholarships are awarded based on a high level of achievement in, academics and extra-curricular activities at the college.

Awards range from $300 to $1,000.

Eligibility requirements:

  • A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Enrolled full-time at Medgar Evers College with a minimum of 30 credits.
  • Must apply for federal financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Submit essay response to one of the topics listed above.

The Gilbert Rivera Scholarship

The Gilbert Rivera Charitable Foundation provides financial resources to assist outstanding undergraduate students who reside in the state of New York. Applicants must be 18 years of age at the time of application. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate a high level of community involvement.

Awards generally range from $500 to $1,500.

Eligibility requirements:

  • A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Currently reside in New York State.
  • Enrolled full-time at Medgar Evers College with a minimum of 30 credits.
  • Must apply for federal financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Professor Yvonne S. Bennett Scholarship Fund

Application Available: February 15- April 15

Professor Yvonne S. Bennett was a longtime supporter of Medgar Evers College, where she worked tirelessly until her passing. She was a dedicated, committed and gifted librarian, with a love for books and a desire to introduce the love of literature to students. Her brother Mr. Raymond Jones has established this scholarship fund in her memory.

Eligibility Requirements:

Mary and William Pinkett Scholarship Fund

Application Available: February 15- April 15

Councilmember Mary Pinkett was a longtime supporter of Medgar Evers College. During her tenure as a member of the New York City Council from 1974 to 2001, she attained senior member status on the Finance Committee and was instrumental in securing substantial financial support for various College facilities and programs. Councilmember Pinkett was the first African American woman elected to serve as a member of the New York City Council.

Community Council Scholarships

Application Available: February 1- April 5

The Community Council of Medgar Evers College is a body of community leaders who played a major role in founding Medgar Evers College. The Council provides active input and support for the College's goals and activities along with scholarships to the student body.

Scholarship Listing:         

  • The Honorable Lucille Rose Memorial Scholarship (1) $1,000

For students demonstrating leadership in civic organizations

  • The Constans Culver Scholarship (1) $1, 000

For students in Accounting, Computer Science, or Business Administration

  • General Academic Achievement (3) $1,000 open to all majors

For students with outstanding cumulative grade point averages

  • Dr. Cecil Gloster Memorial Scholarship (1) $1,000

       For Nursing students or students in Sciences

Eligibility Requirements:

  • All applicants are required to have a 3.0 cumulative average.
  • Completed at least 60 credits at MEC.
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student at MEC.
  • Submit a 500 word essay that provides a concise description of you, your goals, plans and current life situation. Essay must be signed and dated.
  • Two (2) Letters of recommendation specifically address why you should receive the scholarship you are applying for. One letter must be from a faculty member at MEC. The second may be from a faculty member or from a community person familiar with the applicants’ religious/civic/or political work. The letters of recommendation must be on dated and signed letterhead.

School of Liberal Arts Dean’s Scholarship

Dean's Scholarship – School of Liberal Arts & Education award is given to students who are high achieving academically and active in their communities.

This scholarship opportunity is only available to students majoring in Education; Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS); English; Mass Communications; Psychology; Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS); Philosophy & Religious Studies; and Foreign Languages.

Award amount: $1,000

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a graduating senior accepted into graduate school.
  • A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Enrolled full-time at Medgar Evers College.
  • Must apply for federal financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation from faculty members.
  • A U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident with a permanent resident card.

Dr. Mohamed Saleh, M.S. R. PH., Student Role Model and Achievement Scholarship Award

Mohamed Saleh, M.S., R.PH. has established the Student Role Model and Student Achievement Scholarship Award at Medgar Evers College for the science students. He is a Bangladeshi American Pharmacist and owns four pharmacies in NYC. He is a member of Board of Overseers, Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy of Long Island University, NY, and a former member of the Pharmacy Advisory Committee of Medicaid, New York State. Previously he served as a President of the Empire State Pharmaceutical Society and the Bangladeshi-American Pharmacists’ Association. He is the President of the Long Island Muslim Society (LIMS) and former Chairman, Board of Trustees of LIMS. Dr. Saleh is a former human rights commissioner of the Nassau County Humans Rights Commission, New York. We appreciate and thank him for his generosity.

Dr. Mohammed W. Rahman, DDS, & Dr.  Muslima Khandakar Student Leadership & Student Achievement Scholarship Award

Dr. Mohammad W. Rahman, DDS and his wife Dr. Muslima Khandakar, DMD have established The Student Leadership and Student Achievement Scholarship Award for Medgar Evers College Science Students. Both Dr. Rahman and Dr. Khandakar are Bangladeshi American and have their dental practices in Queens and Bronx. Dr. Rahman is currently the Chairman of Al Mamoor School Board and the President Elect of the Jamaica Muslin Center. He is also a member of the executive committee of the Bangledesh Dental Association of North America. We thank them for continuing support.

Dr. Carol DeCosta, M.D. Pre-med Student Scholarship Award

Dr. Carol DeCosta, M.D. has established a Pre-med Student Scholarship Award. She is an Alumnus of Medgar Evers College (MEC) she is also a graduate of S.U.NY. at Buffalo School of Medicine and Columbia University. She received her residency training at Mount Sinai Scholl of Medicine, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitations. Dr. DeCosta is Board Certified and licensed in the State of New York and Georgia. She is also certified in Medical Acupuncture. Her areas of Special interest include Sport Medicine, and treatment of Musculoskeletal and Occupational injuries. Her experience after residency includes Associate Directorship of Outpatient Rehabilitation Medicine at Staten Island University Hospital. Currently, Dr. DeCosta is the Medical Director of Rehabilitation Medicine and Sports Services, P.C. She is on the clinical faculty of Mount Sinai Services at Elmhurst and Queens Hospitals, Downstate Medical School and a team physician for MEC. In addition, she teaches Family Practice to resident physicians at Brooklyn Hospital. Previously she received The Dean’s Distinguished Alumni Award. We appreciate her donation.

Dr. Umesh Nagarkatte, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Mathematics at Medgar Evers College, and his wife Dr. Shailaja Nagarkatte a Professor of Mathematics at the CUNY-Queensborough Community College They have established the School of Science, Health & Technology Faculty and Student Fund with generous donation of twenty five thousand dollars ($25,000). This funds will support faculty development awards and student support awards as determined by the committee of department Chairs headed by the Dean of the school. Previously they have donated one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) to MEC’s Education Foundation to establish scholarships for Mathematics students. We gratefully acknowledge their generous donations for the benefit of our faculty and students.

This scholarship will be awarded annual in the amount of $5000 to students attending Medgar Evers College.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Full-time  Student
  • Math Major
  • In need of financial Assistance (Apply for Financial Aid)
  • At least 3.0 GPA and 3.2 average in mathematics courses
  • Participates in communities activities, including tutoring and mentoring

The Faculty of Biology Scholarship Award
This scholarship is award to the graduating student of Biology Major
Eligibility Requirements

  • Highest GPA in the Bachelor’s Degree Program
  • Highest GPA in the Associate Degree Program
  • Scholarship is awarded doing the end of year-award ceremony
